This is not a good farm report. On the one hand, we found a decent stock trailer for a decent price. We're happy. We also talked with our dairy farmer, who also raises Herefords. He offered us a bred Hereford cow, due to calf this spring, for a decent price. We're considering it. If we don't keep her, we can ship her, and still have a beef calf. Or we can keep her, breed her back, and have two calves next year, with more to come. We're thinking about it.
On the other hand, I went insane. I bought myself a horse. She's old and rusty, just like me. What was I thinking?
And the good news is I was able to park the trailer exactly where I wanted it, in very little time. The bad news is I bent up the back of the truck to do it. I'm dangerous.

I had to google Herefords, even tho I was born in Wisconsin.
They look like hamburger cows. Err, I mean cattle.

OK, let's try that again.
Herefords are beef cattle; they are used primarily for their meat. They do give milk, but usually only to their calves.
Cows are female bovines. Steers are what most people think of as eating animals; they are male bovines that have been castrated. Bulls and cows together make calves (unless you have a bull like Bill the bull, who lived here 6 months and didn't produce a calf with Bess.)
My aunt once asked a group of farmers, "Which are the heifers?" The farmers pointed to some, and she said,"But they can't be. They don't have white faces."
Heifers are young females who have not yet had a calf. I've heard people say they're heifers until they're 2, others until their first calf. I don't know which it is; I think of them as heifers until their first calf. Herefords are traditionally red colored with white faces; my aunt was looking for Herefords, not necessarily heifers.

So Bill the Bull was blasting blanks?
The red with the white faces is what I usually associate with beef cattle; I never knew what they were called. I just know my whole family goes, "Mmmmmm... hamburger!" when we drive past some in a pasture.

I keep threatening to get "big dogs that say moo" whenever I need milk or beef. The cow sounds like a great opportunity, if you can handle the extra work. Congratulations on your new horse!
